UNESCO Awards $95,000 to Zambia for Creative Industry Growth
In a historic milestone for Zambia’s arts sector, UNESCO has approved a $95,000 (K2.5 million) grant to the National Arts Council of Zambia (NAC) to strengthen the country’s creative business environment. This funding, secured under the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD), was approved during the 18th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, from February 11 to 14, 2025. Zambia is among 12 global recipients sharing a total of $1,023,290.65, marking the first time the country has ever received IFCD support.
The 18-month project aims to revamp outdated arts regulations, including the National Arts Council of Zambia Act and the Theatres and Cinematography Exhibitions Act, to create better working conditions for artists. It will also introduce National Arts Labour Standards and a Code of Conduct, ensuring fair labor practices and sustainable growth in the sector. Ministry of Youth, Sport, and Arts Permanent Secretary Mr. Chama Fumba, who is leading Zambia’s delegation in Paris, highlighted that the initiative aligns with President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision to transform the creative industry into a key driver of economic growth. He urged Zambian artists to seize this opportunity and position themselves as entrepreneurs in a thriving creative economy.
This funding is expected to bring lasting change to Zambia’s cultural and creative industries by securing artists’ rights, ensuring fair pay, and establishing governance structures that will sustain the sector’s growth for years to come.
